Bringing animals on the plane

The type, weight and size of your pet as well as the applicable country regulations determine the transport. For a fee, your dog or cat may travel either as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin or as excess baggage in the air-conditioned hold of the passenger aircraft. Please note that due to local conditions and restrictions, it is not possible to transport large animals in the cargo hold to certain destinations. Special regulations apply to assistance dogs. In addition, Lufthansa Cargo offers the transport of these and other types of animals as air cargo.

Exclusively smaller dogs and cats that do not weigh more than 8 kg including the transport container can be transported as additional hand luggage in the aircraft cabin under certain conditions. Larger dogs and cats as well as all other types of animals, regardless of their weight and size, are not permitted in the cabin. Registration must be made at least 72 hours before departure. Otherwise, please contact the Service Centre up to 24 hours before departure.

In order to take an animal as hand luggage in the cabin, we require a confirmation from you that the animal meets the above requirements. Please present two printouts of the fully completed and signed form at the check-in counter.
